Chasmatosuchus was named by Huene (1940). Its type is Chasmatosuchus rossicus.

It was assigned to Thecodontia by Huene (1940); to Erythrosuchidae by Ochev (1979); to Proterosuchidae by Charig and Reig (1970), Charig and Sues (1976), Benton (1985), Carroll (1988) and Gower and Sennikov (2000); and to Archosauriformes by Ezcurra (2016).

Synonyms

Jaikosuchus was named by Sennikov (1990).

It was synonymized subjectively with Chasmatosuchus by Ezcurra (2016).
