E. Perrier 1928Rattachés aux Orvets par la forme de leur langue, leurs dents pleurodontes, recourbées en crochets, préhensiles, renflées à la base; mais ces dents sont creusées d'une gouttière sur leurs faces antérieure et postérieure, et sont en rapport dans la mâchoire inférieure avec des glandes à venin. Les seuls Sauriens venimeux avec les suivants. Peau granuleuse, parsemée de nombreux tubercules irréguliers, disposés en rangées transversales. Corps lourd, large, aplati. Pattes à 5 doigts. Aspect d'une Salamandre.

Bogert 1954Jugal extending forward to meet prefrontal; lacrimal foramen single; vagus passing through the jugular foramen; splenial sutured along ventral margin of coronoid; descending processes of frontals meeting to underarch the olfactory tracts, but not separating the orbits; teeth with venom channels; no temporal arch; no pineal foramen; pro-otic and parietal forming a very short and imperfect contact; vertebral centra not constricted anterior to condyles; vertebral central articulations oblique; phalangeal formula 2-3-4-5-3; sacrum of two vertebrae; pelvis complete; cervical vertebrae eight; no coracoid emarginations; interclavicle longitudinally rod-shaped; postorbital arch complete; osteoderms large, covering dorsal surface and outer surfaces of limbs.
