Ardeosaurus was named by von Meyer (1860). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Ardeosauridae.

It was assigned to Ardeosauridae by Cocude-Michel (1963), Kuhn (1966), Mateer (1982), Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); to Carusiidae by Alifanov (2000); and to Squamata by Bolet and Evans (2010).
