Ardeosauridae was named by Camp (1923). It is not extant. Its type is Ardeosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Mateer (1982).
It was assigned to Scincoidea by Kuhn (1946); to Scincomorpha by Seiffert (1975); to Gekkonoidea by Cocude-Michel (1963), Kuhn (1966) and Mateer (1982); to Gekkota by Estes (1983); and to Nyctisaura by Carroll (1988).
