Paliguana was named by Broom (1903). It is not extant. Its type is Paliguana whitei.
It was assigned to Lacertilia by Broom (1903); to Lepidosauromorpha by Benton (1985); to Paliguanidae by Estes (1983) and Carroll (1988); and to Lepidosauromorpha by Gauthier et al. (1989), Ezcurra et al. (2014) and Ezcurra (2016).
