Taxonomy

Agomphus was named by Cope (1871). Its type is Emys turgidus.

It was assigned to Emydidae by Cope (1884); to Dermatemydidae by Gilmore (1919), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Carroll (1988); to Adocidae by Hay (1902), Wieland (1905) and Weems (1988); to Trionychoidea by Joyce et al. (2004); to Kinosternoidea by Knauss et al. (2011); and to Pandermatemys by Joyce and Bourque (2016).

Amphiemys was named by Cope (1877). It is not extant. Its type is Amphiemys oxysternum.

It was synonymized subjectively with Agomphus by Hay (1902) and Hutchison and Weems (1998).
