It was assigned to Emydidae by Cope (1884); to Dermatemydidae by Gilmore (1919), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Carroll (1988); to Adocidae by Hay (1902), Wieland (1905) and Weems (1988); to Trionychoidea by Joyce et al. (2004); to Kinosternoidea by Knauss et al. (2011); and to Pandermatemys by Joyce and Bourque (2016).
