Differs from N. pusillus and N. peyeri in that it has a relatively small head (skull: trunk ratio is 0.23~0.27), its greater number of teeth (about 30 in upper jaws and 28 in lower jaws), its high neural spines in the posterior trunk and anterior tail region, the presence of three carpals, its relatively short femur (humerus: femur ratio is 1.3~1.8), and its reduced phalangeal count in the foot (1~2~3~4~3).]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Besano (Scisti bituminosi), which is in an Anisian/Ladinian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal dolomite/shale in the Besano Formation of Italy.

It was recombined as Pachypleurosaurus edwardsi by Nopsca (1928) and Kuhn-Schnyder (1974); it was recombined as Neusticosaurus edwardsi by Rieppel and Lin (1995); it was recombined as Neusticosaurus edwardsii by Sander (1989) and Rieppel (1995).
