Taxonomy
Pantylus was named by Cope (1881). It is not extant. Its type is Pantylus cordatus. It is the type genus of Pantylidae.

It was assigned to Stegocephali by Cope (1881); to Edaphosauridae by Cope (1882); to Pariotichidae by Cope (1888) and Hay (1902); to Pantylidae by Hay (1930), Carroll and Gaskill (1978), Carroll (1988) and Carroll et al. (1998); and to Lepospondyli by Maddin et al. (2012).
