It was synonymized subjectively with Sauropleuridae by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Ganocephala by Cope (1875); to Phyllospondyli by Kuhn (1946); to Colosteoidea by Carroll (1988); to Temnospondyli by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Tetrapoda by Clack and Milner (2015).
