Taxonomy
Anas anser was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Anser.

It was recombined as Anser anser by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Rudenko (1960), Burchak-Abramovich and Burchak (1998) and Clements et al. (2017).
