Physeterula was named by Van Beneden (1877) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l T Plio Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Physeterula dubusii. It was considered monophyletic by Uhen et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Hoploceti by Winge (1921); to Physeterinae by Lydekker (1887), Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904), Zittel (1925), Simpson (1945), Muizon (1990), McKenna and Bell (1997), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001) and Kazár (2002); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Physeteridae by Newton (1891), Palmer (1904), Abel (1905), Abel (1919), Kellogg (1928), Carroll (1988), Uhen et al. (2008), Lambert (2008), Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015), Marx et al. (2016), Collareta et al. (2017) and Berta (2017).

| M. D. Uhen et al. 2008 | The shape of the jawbone is slender, and the lower edge is lightly corrugated. The two branches deviate strongly behind compared to the living Physeter, while ahead they are united over a considerable length forming a symphysis, which occupies about one third the length of the jaw. The living sperm whale has a much longer mandibular symphysis (Van Beneden, 1877). |
