Anas discors was named by Linnaeus (1766). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Querquedula discors by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Gut and Ray (1963); it was recombined as Spatula discors by Clements et al. (2017).
