Taxonomy
Tringa squatarola was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1.

It was recombined as Squatarola squatarola by Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942) and Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Pluvialis squatarola by Campbell (1976), Olson and James (1982), Olson and Rasmussen (2001), Broughton (2004) and Clements et al. (2017).
