Taxonomy

Neosqualodon was named by Dal Piaz (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. Its type is Neosqualodon assenzae. It was considered monophyletic by Muizon (1987) and Bianucci et al. (2011).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was considered a nomen dubium by Uhen and Pyenson (2007).

It was assigned to Squalodontinae by Rothausen (1968); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Squalodontidae by Dal Piaz (1904), True (1907), Abel (1919), Winge (1921), Zittel (1925), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Fabiani (1949), Rothausen (1968), Pilleri (1985), Muizon (1987), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Bianucci and Landini (2002) and Geisler and Sanders (2003); and to Odontoceti by Bianucci et al. (2011) and Cioppi (2014).

Synonyms

Microsqualodon was named by Abel (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l].

It was synonymized subjectively with Neosqualodon by Kellogg (1923) and McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Squalodontidae by Abel (1905), Kellogg (1928) and Simpson (1945); and to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002).

Dal Piaz 1904	This new genre has the shape of the skull, especially above, very similar to that of the Squalodon, but it differs from it, because it has a much greater number of molars, at least ten, all with clearly divided roots and a little apart and all with a triangular crown deeply indented both on the anterior edge and on the posterior one.
