Taxonomy
Geochelone (Aldabrachelys) was named by Loveridge and Williams (1957). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cylindraspis by Bour (1982); it was considered an invalid subgroup of Geochelone by Crumly (1982); it was reranked as Aldabrachelys by Gerlach (2012), International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (2013) and van Dijk et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Geochelone by Loveridge and Williams (1957); and to Testudinidae by Gerlach (2012), International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (2013) and van Dijk et al. (2014).
