Taxonomy
Tuarangisaurus was named by Wiffen and Moisley (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes]. Its type is Tuarangisaurus keyesi.

It was assigned to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Elasmosauridae by Carpenter (1999), Sachs (2005), Mateus et al. (2012) and Otero et al. (2012).
