Agrionemys was named by Khosatzky and Mlynarsky (1966). It is extant.

It was assigned to Testudinidae by de la Fuente et al. (2014) and van Dijk et al. (2014); and to Testudininae by Vlachos and Rabi (2018) and de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2020).
