Taxonomy
Leurospondylus was named by Brown (1913) [Sepkoski's age data: K u K Maes-l Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Leurospondylus ultimus.

It was assigned to Alzadasaurinae by Welles (1962); and to Elasmosauridae by Hay (1930), Welles (1943), Carroll (1988) and Sepkoski (2002).

J. J., Jr. Sepkoski 2002Vertebrae all short, much wider than long with articular faces flat. Ribs single-headed throughout. Coracoids without clavicular processes widely separated. Obturator foramina not separated? Ischia triradiate curved plates uniting at anterior-internal angle, posterior angles widely separated. Humerus and femur of equal length.
