Eretmosaurus was named by Seeley (1874) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae J l Sepkoski's reference number: 2].

It was assigned to Dolichodeira by Seeley (1892); to Rhomaleosauridae by Persson (1963); to Plesiosauridae by Lydekker (1889), Delair (1960) and Kuhn (1971); to Pliosauridae by White (1940) and Carroll (1988); to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Microcleididae by Benson et al. (2012); and to Plesiosauria by Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
