Dolichosaurus was named by Owen (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Turo-l]. It is the type genus of Dolichosauridae.

It was assigned to Repentia by Owen (1850) and Owen (1851); to Lacertilia by Owen (1861); to Dolichosauridae by Gervais (1853), McDowell and Bogert (1954), Carroll (1988) and Caldwell (2000); to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dolichosauridae by Paparella et al. (2018).
