Coniasaurus was named by Owen (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-u K Turo-u]. Its type is Coniasaurus crassidens.
It was assigned to Repentia by Owen (1850) and Owen (1851); to Lacertilia by Owen (1861); to Mosasauridae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Aigialosauridae by Carroll (1988); to Mosasauroidea by Caldwell and Cooper (1999); to Squamata by Caldwell (1999) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Dolichosauridae by Bell et al. (1982) and Shimada and Ystesund (2007).
