Thinochelys was named by Zangerl (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K u]. Its type is Thinochelys lapisossea.

It was assigned to Toxochelyinae by Zangerl (1953), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Weems (1988); to Toxochelyidae by Carroll (1988); and to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002).
