Peritresius was named by Cope (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-l K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 987,1069]. Its type is Chelone ornata.

It was synonymized subjectively with Syllomus by Berry (1937).

It was assigned to Chelydrinae by Cope (1870); to Propleuridae by Cope (1884); to Thalassemydidae by Hay (1902); to Cheloniidae by Hay (1930) and Berry and Lynn (1936); to Lophocheliinae by Weems (1988); to Toxochelyidae by Carroll (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pancheloniidae by Gentry et al. (2018).
