It was assigned to Chelonidae by Lydekker (1889); to Desmatochelyidae by Nicholls (1992); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Dermochelyoidae by Bardet et al. (2013); and to Protostegidae by Hirayama (1995) and de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2014).
