Dollochelys was named by Zangerl (1971) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-u T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 987]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Toxochelyinae by Weems (1988); to Toxochelyidae by Carroll (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cheloniidae by Averianov (2002).

A. O. Averianov 2002Medium to large-sized sea turtles.
Skull with primary palate. Dentary of very pronounced
cutting device. Carapace elongated, width
less than 90% of its length. Maximum width of carapace
disc less than 60% of total carapace length. Costonuchal
fontanels absent. Costoperipheral fontanels
large. Antero-lateral peripherals very narrow. Pygal
as long or longer than wide. Plastral index relatively
low (about 37 – 47).
