Taxonomy
Ctenochelys was named by Zangerl (1953) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 987]. It is the type genus of Ctenochelyidae.
It was assigned to Lophocheliinae by Weems (1988); to Toxochelyidae by Carroll (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); to Lophochelyinae by Zangerl (1953), Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Karl and Nyhuis (2012); to Cheloniidae by Hirayama (1995), Joyce et al. (2004), Matzke (2007), Brinkman et al. (2009) and de Lapparent de Broin et al. (2014); and to Ctenochelyidae by Gentry (2018).
