Atlantochelys was named by Agassiz (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K u]. Its type is Atlantochelys mortoni.

It was assigned to Sphargididae by Leidy (1873); to Protostegidae by Hay (1902); to Desmatochelyidae by Hay (1930); and to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002).
