Taxonomy
Ostracion was named by Rafinesque (1815) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Ostraciidae.

It was assigned to Sclerodermi by Agassiz (1835); to Balistidae by Leriche (1942); to Ostraciontidae by Casier (1946); to Tetradontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ostraciidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981), Schwarzhans (2003) and Matsuura (2015).
