Ostracion was named by Rafinesque (1815) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Sclerodermi by Agassiz (1835); to Balistidae by Leriche (1942); to Tetradontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ostraciidae by Thurmond and Jones (1981) and Schwarzhans (2003).
