Taxonomy
Trichiurus was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Trichiurus lepturus.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Leidy (1860); to Trichiuridae by Hay (1902), White (1926), Casier (1958) and Thurmond and Jones (1981); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trichiurinae by Monsch (2004) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
