Sphyraenodus was named by Agassiz (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Ol-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915].

It was synonymized subjectively with Dictyodus by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Sphyraenidae by Rapp (1946); to Scombridae by Bohm (1926), Casier (1946) and Casier (1966); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Scombroidei by Monsch (2004).
