Chrysophris was named by Cuvier (1829). It is extant.

It was reranked as Otolithus (Chrysophris) by Bassoli (1906); it was misspelled as Chrysophrys by Bohm (1926) and Deraniyagala (1969); it was corrected as Chrysophrys by Alessandri (1896), Leriche (1926) and Cione et al. (2000).

It was assigned to Otolithus by Bassoli (1906); to Sparidae by Leriche (1926); to Trygonidae by Deraniyagala (1969); and to Sparidae by Alessandri (1896), Bohm (1926) and Cione et al. (2000).
