Taxonomy
Lactarius was named by Cuvier and Valenciennes (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Lactariinae by Schwarzhans (1980); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lactariidae by Stinton (1957), Schwarzhans (1978), Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (1985), Nolf and Bajpai (1992), Schwarzhans (2019) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
