Gobius was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant. Its type is Gobius niger.
It was assigned to Gobioidei by Agassiz (1835); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gobiidae by Arambourg (1927), Weiler (1959), Heinrich (1969), Schwarzhans (1978), Steurbaut (1979), Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Steurbaut (1984), Böhme (2010), Lin et al. (2017), Agiadi et al. (2020) and Argyriou (2022).
