Gobius was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant. Its type is Gobius niger.
It was assigned to Gobioidei by Agassiz (1835); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gobiidae by Arambourg (1927), Weiler (1959), Heinrich (1969), Schwarzhans (1978), Steurbaut (1979), Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Steurbaut (1984), Böhme (2010), Lin et al.
