Genyonemus was named by Gill (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: Q Plei R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sciaenidae by Fierstine et al. (2012) and Bratishko et al. (2015).
