Scopelogadus was named by Vaillant (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Melamphaidae by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Girone et al. (2006), Fierstine et al. (2012), Lin et al. (2017) and Schwarzhans (2019).
