Taxonomy
Myripristis was named by Cuvier (1827) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. Its type is Myripristis jacobus.

It was assigned to Percoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Myripristinae by Steurbaut (1979) and Steurbaut (1984); to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Myripristidae by Schwarzhans (2013); and to Holocentridae by Casier (1966) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
