Macruroninae was named by Regan (1903).

It was reranked as the family Macruronidae by Nelson et al. (2016) and Schwarzhans et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Gadiformes by Nelson et al. (2016) and Schwarzhans et al. (2017); and to Merlucciidae by Schwarzhans et al. (2017).
