Taxonomy
Platysternidae was named by Gray (1869) [Joyce et al. actually prefer their new name "Panplatysternon," which is an objective junior synonym]. It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Platysterninae by Nopcsa (1928) and Kuhn (1966).

It was assigned to Platysternoidea by Baur (1893); to Dermatemydidae by Nopcsa (1928); to Cryptodiri by Jaekel (1911) and Perrier (1928); to Cryptodira by Gadow (1898) and Kuhn (1946); to Testudinidae by Kuhn (1966); to Testudines by Frank and Ramus (1996); to Cryptoderinea by Joyce et al. (2004); and to Testudinoidea by van Dijk et al. (2014).

E. Perrier 1928Queue longue, revêtue d'anneaux cornés. Tête très grande, complètement rétractile, recouverte par un cuir uni, non divisé. Carapace très aplatie, couverte par les plaques cornées ordinaires, qui sont lisses et juxtaposées; plaques osseuses neurales formant une série continue. Plastron grand; ses plaques cornées séparées des marginales par des inframarginales. Pattes et régime de la famille précédente.
