Palaeogadus was named by Von Rath (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 560,915]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Merlucciinae by Gaemers (1984); to Gadidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Jerzmanska (1968) and Constantin (1999); to Gadiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Merlucciidae by Casier (1966), Schwarzhans (2003), Schwarzhans (2007) and Přikryl et al. (2016).
