Chaunax was named by Lowe (1846) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Lophiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chaunacidae by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983), Schwarzhans (2007) and Schwarzhans (2019).
