Ophidion was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Otolithus (Ophidium) by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983).

It was assigned to Ophididae by Fitch and Lavenberg (1983); to Otolithus by Nolf and Steurbaut (1983); to Ophidiiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ophidiidae by Casier (1946), Stinton (1957), Casier (1958), Schwarzhans (1978), Constantin (1999), Fierstine et al. (2012) and Schwarzhans (2013).
