Haemulon was named by Cuvier (1829). It is extant. It is the type genus of Haemulidae, Haemulinae.

It was assigned to Haemulinae by Tavera et al. (2012); and to Haemulidae by Stringer (1998), Lin et al. (2017) and Ebersole et al. (2019).
