Leptecodon was named by Williston (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Leptecodon rectus.

It was assigned to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901); to Dercetidae by Hay (1902); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
