Taxonomy
Ichthyotringa was named by Cope (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 2,863,915]. Its type is Ichthyotringa tenuirostris. It is the type genus of Ichthyotringidae.

It was assigned to Dercetidae by Hay (1902); to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ichthyotringidae by Goody (1969), Dietze (2009), Amalfitano et al. (2020) and Argyriou et al. (2022).
