Taxonomy
Cimolichthys was named by Leidy [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 718]. Its type is Cimolichthys levesiensis. It is the type genus of Cimolichthyidae.

It was assigned to Cimolichthyidae by Goody (1970); to Enchodontidae by Woodward (1901), Hay (1902), Woodward (1902), Applegate (1970) and Thurmond and Jones (1981); and to Alepisauriformes by Sepkoski (2002).
