Pseudoberyx was named by Pictet and Humbert (1866) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Pseudoberyx syriacus.

It was assigned to Clupeidae by Woodward (1899); to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); and to Salmoniformes by Sepkoski (2002).
