Taxonomy
Sardinella was named by Cuvier and Valenciennes (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Clupea (Sardinella) by de Beaufort (1926).

It was assigned to Clupea by de Beaufort (1926); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Clupeidae by Danil'chenko (1960), Danil'chenko (1967), Constantin (1999) and Přikryl et al. (2016); and to Clupeinae by Steurbaut (1984), Schwarzhans (2019) and Kovalchuk et al. (2020).
