Engraulis was named by Cuvier (1817) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 746,915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Clupeoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Clupeidae by Girone et al. (2006); and to Engraulidae by Fierstine et al. (2012), Schwarzhans (2013) and Schwarzhans (2019).
