It was assigned to Clupeoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Clupeiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Clupeidae by Girone et al. (2006); and to Engraulidae by Fierstine et al. (2012), Schwarzhans (2013) and Schwarzhans (2019).
