Moorevillia was named by Applegate (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Moorevillia hardi.

It was assigned to Bananogmiidae by Applegate (1970) and Thurmond and Jones (1981); and to Crossognathiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
