Apsopelix was named by Cope (1871) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Apsopelix sauriformis.

It was assigned to Albulidae by Hay (1902); to Crossognathiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Crossognathidae by Miyata et al. (2022).
